Last year around canada day I won a radio contest from 99.3 the fox in Vancouver. The contest was for me and a friend to fly to Manchester, England and partake in a meet and greet with saul hudson (a.k.a slash from Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver). But before we got the chance to take off the plane broke down... yup you guessed it.
Was a KLM DC-10. Same one I see everyday landing at YVR. Anyways, when they told us that the flight was going to be delayed 24 hrs. I thought to myself... this isn't going to do at all. We would get to manchester 2 hours after the show was started. Went home, got some sleep. Got up at sometime around 6am. And got on the phone to delta airlines (aparently delta, KLM and Air France are in ca-hoots) and they accomodated me. I told them my story and they hooked me up with a flight to Salt Lake City, Utah from vancouver. Then from SLC to Paris, France. And then to Manchester.
We arrived around 4pm GMT. Got to the hotel and asked the lady at the front desk for a wake up call for 6 so we could make it to the show for 7. Well the phone rang at 7. Aparently the lady forgot and called us at 7. Way to go bitch. So we got a cab and make it there at like 7:15pm...ish. done... missed the meet and greet.
I had the tour managers number (the radio station gave me the number just in case something went wrong) and ran down the street to a pay phone to call him. But to my dismay the phone was broken. Yup. Almosy destined to not meet Slash. What a bunch of bullshit I though. But what can you do. I still got to see one of my childhood idols play in a tiny venue in university of manchester.
Went back to the hotel, ordered a few pints and went to sleep. Flew our the next morning (july 4th, 2010) to JFK international airport in NYC. Arrived on NYC sometime, don't remember when. But let me tell you JFK on Independance day= gong show. So much security...
Got the hell outta there and flew to minnesota. Lay over there for 3 hours. Ate a burger and had a pint. Arrived back in Vancouver a few hours later.
Told this story to Todd Hancock and Karen K, the fox's afternoon DJ's. They were going to try and get me a meet and greet pass for when Slash played here some months later. But nothing materialized. Still was a pretty cool adventure.
Oh... side note: none of my friends that were available to go had a passport except for one; Szymon Pekalski.
